BAI
Aerosystems, Inc. Sponsors Student UAV Competition
ST.
INIGOES, MARYLAND, June 25, 2004 – BAI Aerosystems, Inc. is
pleased to sponsor the Second Annual Association for Unmanned Vehicle
Systems, International (AUVSI) Student UAV Competition that is being
held June 25th -27th at the U.S. Navy’s Webster Field Annex
at St. Inigoes, MD. The competition is being hosted under the auspices
of the U.S. Navy’s Program Executive Office for Strike Weapons
& Unmanned Aviation (PEO-W).
BAI Aerosystems joins the AUVSI Pathfinder Chapter, Northrop-Grumman
Corporation, Johns Hopkins University-Applied Physics Laboratory,
and others in sponsoring the event, which challenges a new generation
of undergraduate university engineers to design and build UAVs capable
of performing realistic autonomous missions in an aviation environment,
and which fosters ties between young engineers from across the nation
and the organizations that are actively developing UAV technologies
for commercial, defense, and scientific applications.
Competition objectives are for an unmanned, radio-controlled aircraft
to be launched and flown manually, then transition to autonomous
flight and navigate a specific course, using onboard sensors to
locate and assess a series of man-made objects prior to returning
to the launch point. Total mission time, energy consumption, aircraft
cost, and numerous other factors are scored.
BAI Aerosystems, a leading supplier of unmanned aircraft systems technology
since 1985, has been a sponsor of the AUVSI Student Competition
since its inception in 2003. The Company is a Gold corporate member
of AUVSI, who officially sanctions the increasingly popular event.
